Action

This March, CCD is launching its first official Online Advocacy Month! Each week, we’ll let you know a new way you can take action and fight for progressive values in both Washington and Sacramento. Please view our action opportunities below:

Write a letter to your community

Can you imagine what the largest cuts to public education in our state’s history would look like? That’s exactly what Republicans are pushing for when they refuse to support Governor Brown’s proposed tax extensions. Without these common sense temporary extensions of existing taxes, our state will be forced to cut billions in K-12, higher education, other vital services.

We haven’t gotten the tax extensions yet, but we can do it if we continue to sway public opinion. That is why we need you to write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper so we can share the importance of these tax extensions to communities across California.

A community is most responsive to the thoughts and opinions of its members. That is why it is vital that your own community hears what you have to say about the budget. In your community, your voice has authority.

Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, and let your community know California needs these tax extensions, not an all-cuts budget!

Share your story

Budgets are more than just graphs and numbers — they affect each and every one of us on a personal level. Governor Brown understands this, and that’s why he’s working hard to limit future cuts — but he needs our help.

We need to help him win the battle of public opinion and convince Californians that we need to change course – and the best way we can do that is by sharing our stories.

Please share your story on how you have been affected by budget cuts!

Stories are our most powerful weapons. Numbers provide an abstract notion of the way things are, but only stories show the human faces behind the statistics. They allow us to empathize with complete strangers, to understand their struggles, and to humanize a debate that all too often is only argued in monetary terms.

If we let Californians know what more cuts would mean, we can drive the debate in Sacramento. Please help us fight for higher education by telling us how you would be affected by budget cuts!

Tell Republicans to support a special election!

While Governor Brown’s budget makes many painful choices, it avoids the worst cuts by asking the people to temporarily extend existing taxes. However, Republicans are refusing to cooperate. They want an all-cuts budget, which would more than *double* the cuts to higher education, K-12, and other essential services.

Governor Brown wants to reach a deal by March 10, which means important decisions are being made *right now*. We need to weigh in and let our legislators know that we need a special election.

Click here to tell your legislators than an all-cuts budget is unacceptable, and that Californians deserve a special election to decide for themselves!

Now, as budget negotiations come to a head, it’s more important than ever that we speak up. Please email your legislators and let them know you support a special election.
